How Big Is an Alaskan King Bed?

Spacious sleeping has become a talking point among our clientele.  As homes get larger and design sensibilities lean toward indulgent master suites, people begin to wonder how far a bed can go beyond the standard king. The term Alaskan King conjures images of vastness and majesty. It describes a mattress that measures nine feet by nine feet—108 inches by 108 inches. That square footprint results in eighty‑one square feet of sleep surface—more than double the area of a full mattress.

A typical king is seventy‑six inches wide by eighty inches long, and a California king is slightly narrower and longer. Compared with these familiar sizes, the Alaskan King is over thirty inches wider and nearly two feet longer.

When we describe such a bed to guests in our showrooms, we stress that it’s not just about numbers. A bed of this magnitude has presence; it invites you to stretch out with ease, share the space with loved ones and still feel unconfined. Because it is the largest of the established mattress sizes, we advise placing it in a room of at least 16 by 13 feet to allow for bedside tables and circulation.

How Big Is an Alaskan King Bed?

Precision matters when talking about oversized beds. The Alaskan King measures 108 inches by 108 inches, forming a perfect square. That nine‑foot dimension on each side leaves a tremendous amount of room for sleeping. The difference compared with other oversized mattresses is significant: a Texas King is 80 by 98 inches and a Wyoming King is 84 by 84 inches.

Sleep studies have shown, the bigger the better. Since an Alaskan King is exactly twice the width of a traditional Full / Double mattress, it has plenty of room for family members and pets to sleep with you without disturbing your rest.

When considering the size, think beyond the mattress itself. The full sleeping environment includes the frame, bedside tables and the ability to move around the bed. Oversized mattresses may be delivered in sections to navigate doorways and stairs, yet the sheer weight and bulk mean rotating them requires more effort than with a conventional bed. These practical points help balance the obvious allure of abundant space.

What Are the Key Features of an Alaskan King

An Alaskan King mattress isn’t just big; at The Luxury Bed Collection we treat it as a canvas for craftsmanship. We draw upon traditional techniques and innovative design, producing mattresses from sustainable materials such as teased horsehair and layered wool. Those natural fibers are sourced responsibly and assembled by artisans who spend hundreds of hours constructing a bed to your specifications. The result is a sleep surface that feels cool in summer, warm in winter and remains free from synthetic chemicals. In addition, when your body temperature is regulated, you sleep longer, deeper and with less interruptions. The longevity of these materials gives you a mattress designed to last for decades rather than years.

We also believe that one size does not fit all. Our partnership with bespoke makers, such as Vispring, allows us to offer fully customizable beds. Their philosophy acknowledges that sleep is personal and unique, which is why they provide a range of spring counts, fillings and tensions and invite clients to opt for a customized service. These bespoke mattresses can be built extra long, extra wide or even shaped with cut‑out corners for antique bedsteads or four‑poster frames. Divans can be constructed in sections to negotiate spiral staircases during delivery. This flexibility means that even a monumental size like the Alaskan King can be tailored to your interior and your lifestyle, whether you’re dealing with a historic home or a modern loft.

Our clients often ask about materials. In our collection you’ll find mattresses hand‑nested with pocket springs made from vanadium steel, upholstered with British wool, horsetail, silk and cashmere. Every fiber performs a purpose: wool for moisture regulation, horsehair for resilience, silk and cashmere for softness. Each pocket spring is fitted to provide a balance of support and responsiveness. Because our beds are built by hand and made to order, we can incorporate these natural materials into any size, including the Alaskan King.

Why Would You Want an Alaskan King Bed?

Deciding on a bed this substantial is about more than bragging rights, this is where size truly matters! Sleep scientists have studied space, the more space you have to sleep uninterrupted the better you sleep. Half of a queen bed is smaller than a child’s twin. Half of a king mattress is the width of a child’s twin. If you have the space, bigger is better.  A large bed has additional tangible benefits, especially for households with active sleepers, taller adults, multiple and large pets or young children who like to snuggle. Families who co‑sleep appreciate the freedom to share space without crowding each other. The Alaskan King offers room for at least three adults to lie side by side, and it leaves extra length so that even someone over six feet tall has more than two feet of space beyond their feet. For those who routinely feel constricted by a standard king, the Alaskan King provides relief.

The additional surface area also has subtle effects on sleep quality. When partners have more room, they disturb each other less. Motion transfer is diminished because there is literally more distance between sleepers. Taller individuals no longer have their feet pressing against the footboard or dangling in the air. And if you enjoy reading or watching films in bed, there’s space to spread out your pillow and blanket arrangement without encroaching on your partner’s side.

Another reason people choose an Alaskan King is aesthetic. A bed of this size can balance a generous master suite or anchor an expansive loft. In rooms with high ceilings and substantial floor space, a standard king may look dwarfed, whereas a larger mattress creates a harmonious focal point that welcomes creative headboard designs and integrated nightstands.

Such a bed is not for everyone. It requires a room with space and commands a premium price. Bedding may need to be specially ordered, and delivery takes planning. We regard the Alaskan King as an investment piece—an indulgence that rewards you nightly but must align with your home and lifestyle.

Where To Buy an Alaskan King Bed

Oversized mattresses aren’t widely stocked in big box stores. Because the Alaskan King is a specialty size, it usually must be special‑ordered from a manufacturer that crafts beds by hand. At The Luxury Bed Collection, we are proud to be one of the few purveyors capable of creating this extraordinary bed. We don’t assemble products on an assembly line; we build every mattress by hand, using natural materials and time‑honored methods. Our artisans can craft an Alaskan King in any tension you prefer, and we can go beyond the conventional square footprint to accommodate unique spaces and design visions.

We invite clients to visit one of our showrooms in Chicago, Dallas or Naples to experience the scale and comfort of these mattresses firsthand. Our Sleep Curators combine knowledge of biology, physics and physiology to guide you toward the right bed. A consultation allows us to understand how you sleep, the environment you wish to create and the investment you want to make. That conversation informs every choice, from spring density to upholstery, ensuring that your Alaskan King will be as unique as you.

If you’re ready to embrace the ultimate in sleeping space, the team at The Luxury Bed Collection can make a bed in any size and shape. Whether you dream of a nine‑foot square oasis or require something longer, wider or sculpted to fit an antique frame, we welcome the challenge. We are here to deliver the most luxurious, handcrafted sleep experience in the world—a bed that embodies indulgence, craftsmanship and individuality.
